It is superb—lively, floral, complex and with a long, savoury finish, it is a gorgeous wine, alone or with fine food—excellent with poached salmon or prawns and mayonnaise, oysters, salads and ceviche for example. It is an award-winning wine and this, the 2022 vintage, is equally impressive and expected to garner another batch of awards in the new contests.
On the nose, and on first taste, Colomé is like a walk in a garden of roses and orange blossoms. Stephen Tanzer, the international wine critic known for his taste for finesse, awarded it a huge 90 points when he tasted the wine, writing: ‘Lovely floral lift to the aromas of mandarin orange, minerals, wild herbs and anise. Tactile, sappy and uncompromisingly dry, with a saline nuance to the complex flavors of citrus peel, herbs and rose petal. Finishes savoury and long.’
Bodega Colomé has a long pedigree. Established in 1831 in the Upper Calchaquí Valley in Salta, in the far north of Argentina by the Spanish Governor of Salta, Nicolás Severo de Isasmendi y Echalar, it is not only the oldest winery in Argentina, at 6,000 to 10,000 feet above sea level it is the world’s highest vineyard. Tanzer called it, ‘A lot of wine for the gentle price’ and the Club Tasting Panel agree, advising Members to snap it up now, drink a case or two and keep the rest for next year, particularly at the Club’s advantageous price to Members.

Colome, a wine estate in the wine-rich Salta region of Argentina, is home to historic vines that were planted here during as early as 1854. The first Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon vines, which were brought from France, were planted in this estate during that time.
Apart from the soil quality and the climatic conditions, an important quality that is responsible for the quality of wines created here is the altitude of the vines. At such a height, the vines have the potential to ease out extreme climatic conditions. They are exposed to a large number of ultraviolet rays of the sun, which plays a huge role in the natural thickening of the skin of the grapes. This is why the fruits cultivated here have a good tannin finish and deep colour.
Malbec and Torrontes, fruits that are grown in high-altitude areas, are the main grape varietals cultivated here. Torrente’s grape varietal is quite unique because it is cultivated only in Argentina.
