Villa Sant’Andrea, a Belmond hotel, best rates for this stunning five-star hotel on its own private golden beach in heavenly Taormina Mare, Sicily: Luxurious, sheltered, breathtakingly beautiful, live life as if in a private villa in an earlier age: perfect beach holiday and the way to see Mount Etna and the ancient Greek Theatre in style

Down by the sea, with its own private beach on one of the most beautiful coastlines in all Italy, blissful Villa Sant’Andrea, a Belmond hotel, holds prime position in heavenly Taormina Mare. Remote, sheltered and stunningly beautiful, Villa Sant’Andrea is a portal to a more elegant age—a world of elegant indulgence which is the perfect way to experience Mount Etna, Taormina, Sicily and Italian style—peaceful, idyllic, and conjuring up an era of leisured luxury which is second to none.

Villa Sant’Andrea was built as the private villa of Robert Trewhella, a Cornishman and civil engineer who came to Sicily to develop the country’s infrastructure in the 1800s. It was completed in 1919, becoming an hotel in the 1950s. To this day the secluded 70-room retreat retains the charm of a private residence.

Spared the foot traffic of nearby Isola Bella, it offers a sybaritic blend of culture, cucina and relaxation, with magnificent, mighty Mount Etna and historic Taormina on the doorstep. Added to which are the elegant, spacious rooms, coolly sophisticated and welcoming.

A labyrinth of marble hallways leads to these sea-view rooms and suites with their private terraces bejewelled by bright geraniums perfect for alfresco breakfasts overlooking the sparkling sea. All guest rooms are classically luxurious with subtle décor, sumptuous furniture and fine artwork: think Sicilian ceramics, woven rattan bedheads and framed antiques. Those staying in suites will find delicate LabSolue scents perfuming the space with tangerine notes.

The most spacious is the two-bedroom pool suite with a separate living area and a large furnished solarium with a private heated pool. What’s more, you are surrounded by Nature, thanks to understated stone and wood décor alongside lush, terraced tropical gardens. These landscaped gardens offer ample space to relax in the shade of leafy palms and fragrant fruit trees, with winding pathways for taking the short stroll through the lush foliage on the way to the picturesque beach.

As to the food—to breakfast, lunch and dine at Villa Sant’Andrea is true pleasure. Enjoy fresh local seafood at Brizza on the beach—but for serious culinary masterpieces Ristorante Sant’Andrea is considered the best restaurant in Taormina, serving the finest fresh produce in elegant surroundings overlooking the bay.

It’s a romantic setting—the sea shimmering in sunlight and moonlight alike—and the food is also sublime. Think fresh homemade pasta dishes, lobsters and octopus, suckling pig, charcoal-grilled rib-eye steak and rack of lamb, crisp salads and inspired vegetable creations, followed by sweet Italian classics for dessert. The wine list is superb: Etna, with its unsurpassed volcanic terroir, is now Italy’s top wine region, and here you will savour the finest wines from the slopes of Mount Etna, from the rest of Italy and the world.

Experiences such as private visits to the tallest active volcano in Europe, and teeming, fascinating Taormina; boat trips to hidden coves and soaring helicopter trips; wine tastings in Sicily’s celebrated vineyards—Belmond has even refurbished a vintage train from the 1940s so you can travel back in time as you visit family-owned wineries in the foothills of the volcano—and meandering journeys to the hilltop towns of Savoca and Forza d’Agro, all beckon. A cable car whisks you in minutes up to the centre of Taormina, with its archaeological and cultural attractions, , restaurants, pavement cafes and sophisticated boutiques.

Stroll along winding streets, enjoy panoramic views from the borgo of Castelmola and stop for a pistachio granita in town after a visit to the Ancient Greek Theatre. Or take your private shuttle and in a few minutes you are high up in the Villa’s sister Belmond hotel, Grand Hotel Timeo, which stands beside the Greek Theatre and has unrivalled views over Mount Etna. Here you can visit the spa—in addition to your spa at the Villa—lunch or dine, or enjoy a drink on the terrace, while looking out over the volcano. Having use of the additional facilities of Grand Hotel Timeo as well as Villa Sant’Andrea offers guests two holiday experiences in a single stay, each with its own individual pleasures combined with supreme Belmond service.

This is the beach holiday of our dreams. You may explore the antiquities and the natural wonders, or you may do nothing more than relax by the sea and in your villa, enjoying delicious food and cool refreshing cocktails. But for energetic sea bathers, divers, snorkellers and water sports enthusiasts there is much to do, from swimming and paddle boarding to exploring the quiet coastal waters with their abundant marine life. And there’s no shortage of boat trips on which to embark.

Explore secluded bays with magical caves, including the Grotta Azzurra. Beautiful little islands are there to discover. Sail to the magical island of Filicudi to feast on warm Aeolian hospitality, where jewel-like fruits are grown in abundance beside bright bougainvillea and the cobalt-blue sea.

The Ionian Sea is rejuvenative. Villa Sant’Andrea is the place to stay, and make that rejuvenation perfect.
