The story of Netherby Hall begins more than two thousand years ago on the site of the Roman fort Castra Exploratorum, an important outpost guarding the empire’s northern frontier. Garrisoned by cohorts of foot soldiers and cavalry, it featured an impressive bathhouse whose remains, uncovered in the 18th century, yielded inscriptions and artefacts that still speak of Roman life on the edge of empire.
After the legions departed, the land became part of the notoriously lawless Debatable Lands, where peel towers rose against reiver raids and families such as the Grahams turned from border raiders to landed gentry. For some four centuries the Grahams called Netherby home, transforming the original pele tower into the substantial mansion that stands today – a Grade II* listed gem of Jacobean and Victorian character, complete with a magnificent staircase and panelled rooms that whisper of Sir Walter Scott’s visits and political intrigue.
.
In more recent times, Gerald and Margo Smith have undertaken a sympathetic multi-million-pound restoration, bringing the main house, walled gardens and courtyard buildings back to vivid life while keeping the main hall as their family home. The result is nine exceptionally comfortable self-catering apartments and cottages set within the private estate. These are no ordinary holiday lets: expect generous spaces filled with thoughtful details, fresh flowers from the garden on arrival, and the freedom to live as one would in one’s own country home. Dogs are warmly welcomed, with a dedicated exercise area and treats provided, while electric vehicle charging adds a practical modern touch. The surrounding acres invite unhurried walks, and the sense of peace is profound – yet civilisation is never far away, with the M6 a mere 15-minute drive and Hadrian’s Wall, the Lake District and the Scottish Borders all within easy reach.
What elevates the experience still further is the short hop to the Pentonbridge Inn, another former coaching inn in the same evocative border country, just three miles away in Penton. Restored with the same care and reopened in 2017, it now holds a Michelin star that it has worn with quiet confidence since 2023. Here the kitchen draws liberally on the estate’s walled garden as well as the finest Cumbrian producers, turning out an eight-course tasting menu that feels both ambitious and wonderfully approachable. The dining room strikes precisely the right note – relaxed refinement rather than formality – with the option of fireside drinks or a post-prandial stroll. For those who wish to linger, there are nine stylish ensuite bedrooms, several with indulgent bathtubs, some dog-friendly.
Together, they create something greater than the sum of their parts. One can settle into the unhurried rhythm of estate life at Netherby Hall — perhaps enjoying breakfast overlooking the gardens before a day exploring Roman ruins or border trails — and then dress for an evening of serious pleasure at the Inn, knowing the produce on the plate travelled only a short distance from the same soil. It is a model of thoughtful, connected hospitality that feels entirely natural in this landscape.
