Our excellent Pytchley cords, still the best – all-time classic pure cotton cord trousers, now back in eight colours for the new season

A good pair of cords is one of the most useful things in a gentleman’s autumn and winter wardrobe.

There is something wonderfully easy about them. They are sufficiently smart for lunch or a day in town, yet entirely at home in the country, and sit particularly happily between flannels and more casual trousers.

The great pleasure of the Pytchleys is how easily they work with clothes one already owns. We’d wear them with tweed jackets in blue, brown, lovat and olive; Tattersall, Oxford or brushed cotton shirts; and lambswool, merino or cashmere as the weather turns colder. Brown calf and suede are natural companions, whether loafers, brogues or proper country shoes.

And colour is where cords become particularly interesting. Gurteen have given us a splendid palette this season: Light Stone and Sand for wonderfully useful neutrals; Loden and Emerald for those natural country greens which sit so happily with tweed; Navy and Cornflower for the blues; and Poppy and Lilac for something with rather more character.

The Poppy is particularly handsome—rich and deep rather than bright—while the softer Lilac and Cornflower should be especially good for bringing a little colour to the darker days of autumn and winter. Between them, there is very little in a gentleman’s wardrobe that these eight colours won’t work with.

We have offered our Pytchley cords for more than 20 years and, although the tailors supplying them have changed over that time, the name has rather stuck.

Today they are beautifully tailored for us by Gurteen, whose Warwick trouser gives us exactly what we look for in a Pytchley: proper pure cotton corduroy, a comfortable classic cut and a particularly good choice of colours for an autumn and winter wardrobe.

Longstanding Members may simply continue to call them their Pytchleys. We certainly shall.
