A good quilted gilet is a boon — but there are occasions when only tweed will do. This is where Gurteen’s new Penrith comes in.The Penrith takes one of the most useful garments in a gentleman’s country wardrobe and gives it the treatment it deserves: pure wool tweed, proper tailoring and a particularly handsome raised collar. That collar gives the waistcoat a clean, masculine line and makes the Penrith altogether smarter than the usual padded affair.
It is also immensely practical. Worn simply over a Tattersall or checked shirt, it is just the thing for an autumn morning when a jacket feels unnecessary. Add lambswool or cashmere as the temperature falls, or wear it beneath a shooting or field coat when winter properly arrives. And because it is tailored rather than padded, it is perfectly capable of coming indoors for lunch.

What we particularly like about the Penrith is that it still feels like tailoring. The proper wool tweed, buttoned front and distinctive stand collar give the garment sufficient presence to be worn in its own right, while its sleeveless cut makes it exceptionally useful for layering.The choice of tweed allows a gentleman to take it in whichever direction best suits his wardrobe.
- Spice has the warm, earthy character of traditional country clothing and sits particularly happily with brown, lovat, olive and the richer autumn shades.
- Sage is the natural choice for those who favour greens and the quieter colours of the countryside.
- Blue will be especially useful for gentlemen whose wardrobes are built around navy, blue and grey.
A good tweed has the agreeable habit of picking up the colours around it. All three should work handsomely with Tattersall and checked shirts, lambswool or cashmere, cords and moleskins, and a well-worn pair of brogues or boots. Choose the tweed which looks most at home amongst the clothes you already own.
The Penrith occupies that rather agreeable territory between waistcoat, gilet and country jacket — smart enough for lunch, practical enough for a day outside, and particularly useful when the weather cannot quite decide what it is doing.There is something reassuringly old-fashioned about wearing proper wool tweed for warmth, yet the Penrith itself looks remarkably contemporary.
