This is the sort of jacket which earns its place in a man’s wardrobe by being remarkably easy to wear. A good blue tweed has much of the usefulness of a navy blazer, but with considerably more texture and character, and this new Cobham from Gurteen is especially well judged.
The pure wool cloth is a lovely textured blue rather than a flat navy. Running through it is a restrained lighter blue windowpane, accompanied by subtler checks which give the weave additional warmth and interest. Look closely and there is plenty going on; stand back and the effect is quiet, masculine and extremely wearable.
That makes choosing trousers particularly easy. For town, lunch or occasions calling for collar and tie, we’d wear it with mid-grey or charcoal flannels, a pale blue or white shirt and perhaps a burgundy, dark green or quietly patterned silk tie. Taupe, fawn, stone and camel work beautifully for something less formal — and the new Taupe Longford autumn chinos we’ve just selected from Gurteen would be particularly good. For weekends and the country, cords, cavalry twills and moleskins in tobacco, olive and earthy browns will work equally well.
Fine merino knitwear in oatmeal, camel, burgundy or navy, or a smart Gurteen Ross waistcoat will take it comfortably into colder weather.
The Cobham is beautifully tailored in 100% pure wool, in Gurteen’s classic regular fitting, with a two-button single-breasted front and side vents.
Handsome without being showy, smart without being overly formal, this is precisely the sort of jacket one reaches for again and again — for lunch, racing, travelling, a country weekend or dinner.

Gurteen – English tailors since 1784.
We have long admired Gurteen for producing properly tailored English menswear at remarkably sensible prices. Established in Suffolk in 1784, the family firm has been making cloth and clothing for more than two centuries and remains family run today. There is a reassuringly traditional quality to their tailoring – good cloths, proper construction and comfortable, masculine cuts – which is precisely why Gurteen has become such a favourite with CountryClubuk Members.
