The Gurteen tailored autumn chinos are back – and in five particularly good colours

A good pair of chinos is one of the hardest-working things in a gentleman’s wardrobe, and Gurteen’s Longford has always struck us as particularly well judged. There is enough tailoring about them to look right beneath a good jacket, without the formality of flannels – precisely why they work so well for lunch, travelling, a weekend in the country or simply those occasions when jeans aren’t quite enough.

The cut is reassuringly traditional without being loose: flat fronted, comfortably fitted through the seat and thigh and finishing with a neat 40cm hem. A little stretch in the cotton cloth and waistband makes them particularly comfortable throughout the day, while the new-season cloth has a rich, clean colour which gives the trousers a rather smarter appearance.

And the five colours are exceptionally useful. Taupe is splendid with navy and blue tweeds; Navy is the indispensable all-rounder; Cranberry comes into its own with olive, lovat, brown and navy; Charcoal is perhaps the smartest of the five and excellent beneath a checked jacket; while Cobalt provides a little more colour and looks particularly good with brown, oatmeal and other natural shades.

Add an Oxford or country shirt, a good leather belt and brown suede loafers or brogues. As the weather cools, add fine knitwear and one of your favourite tweed jackets.
