Warm, substantial and wonderfully soft, a really good pair of moleskins remains essential British winter kit. Gurteen Esquire’s Epsom trousers are made in 100% brushed pure cotton moleskin, with the weight and warmth one wants when the temperature drops and a beautifully soft handle which only gets better with wear.
They are also very well cut. Gurteen are supreme trouser specialists, and the Epsom has their traditional Classic fit: flat fronted, comfortable through the leg and properly proportioned, with a 44cm hem. These are trousers made to sit naturally beneath a tweed jacket, waistcoat, country coat or good piece of knitwear – and to remain comfortable all day.
For the new season Camel joins Dark Olive, Thyme and Navy, making an already useful collection better still. Camel is particularly good with blue and navy jackets; Thyme is the nearest to a classic country beige, with just a hint of olive about it; Dark Olive belongs naturally with tweed; and Navy goes with pretty much everything in the wardrobe, smart and casual alike.
For country wear in winter, from working the dogs to walking, gardening and more, they are difficult to improve upon. And for anybody who suffers from cold legs, they are ideal.

Moleskin is one of those fabrics one is rather loath to be parted from once winter properly arrives. The densely woven cotton is brushed to produce that characteristic soft surface, giving considerably more warmth and substance than an ordinary cotton trouser without the formality of wool flannel.
And few things work better with a country jacket. Camel is the particularly useful newcomer: handsome with navy, blue, lovat and darker brown tweeds, and very good with a blue Oxford shirt and brown suede. Dark Olive is a natural partner for brown and earthy checks; Thyme is softer, almost fawn, and particularly good with lovat, rust and autumnal tweeds; while Navy is the dependable pair to reach for when there is already plenty happening in the jacket.
With a Tattersall shirt, lambswool sweater and country brogues they are entirely at home outdoors. Add an Oxford shirt, knitted tie and one of our Gurteen pure wool jackets and the same trousers are quite smart enough for lunch.
The practical details are reassuringly traditional too: flat front, non-slip waistband, secure waist fastening, proper pockets and a comfortable Classic cut. And unlike plenty of winter trousers, they can simply go into the washing machine.
Very well cut, wonderfully warm and made to last for years – which probably explains why good moleskins have changed remarkably little.
