A proper coat, made properly:
There is much to like about the Magee Fergal, starting with that wonderful Smokey Grey herringbone. Look at it from a distance and it is a very smart charcoal grey; get a little closer and the herringbone comes into its own, giving the coat plenty of character without making it difficult to wear.
The cloth is 90% wool and 10% cashmere, which is a particularly good combination for a winter coat. There is plenty of wool for warmth and substance, with just enough cashmere to give it a noticeably softer feel.
The cut is equally straightforward. Long, single-breasted and with a soft raglan-style shoulder, the Fergal has a generous collar, four-button front, slanted pockets and buttoned cuff tabs. Nothing fussy, and nothing there simply for effect.
Magee has saved its little bit of extravagance for the inside, with a rather splendid purple lining.
We particularly like the way the Fergal can be worn. Put it on over a jacket and trousers and it is perfectly at home heading into town. Wear it with a good sweater, cords and country shoes and it looks just as comfortable on a woodland walk. And, as our photographs show, add a tweed cap and scarf and it looks very much as though winter might actually be something to look forward to.
Non-Members £545. CountryClubuk Members £295 including UK mainland delivery.
For a 90% wool and 10% cashmere Magee overcoat, we think that is rather good value.
A proper winter coat — and one we suspect you’ll be reaching for rather often.
