Gurteen’s new-season Cobham starts with a beautifully textured slate-blue pure wool, woven in a subtle herringbone and crossed by a restrained burgundy check. The blue keeps everything familiar and wonderfully easy to wear; the herringbone and overcheck give the cloth considerably more depth and character than a plain blazer.
And it is properly cut. Gurteen’s Regular fit gives the Cobham the proportions of a traditional tailored jacket, with a neat shoulder, handsome lapels and a well-balanced two-button front. There is comfortable room through the body without losing shape, while the side vents allow the jacket to fall cleanly. Good line and balance rather than fashionable tightness – exactly what we want from a pure wool jacket.
The photograph rather proves its usefulness. A pale blue Oxford shirt, navy knitted tie and stone chinos look splendid with it. Grey flannels will smarten things further; cords and moleskins take it naturally into the country; and we’d have no hesitation wearing it with good dark denim at the weekend.
This is the great attraction of the Cobham: proper tailoring and proper wool, but with considerably more character than the navy jacket already hanging in the wardrobe.

Blue is perhaps the most useful colour in a gentleman’s wardrobe, but it needn’t always be plain navy. The mélange of the wool gives this Cobham a wonderfully rich slate-blue ground, while the fine herringbone only becomes apparent at closer quarters. Then comes that discreet burgundy check, adding just enough warmth and interest.
It is an excellent cloth for wearing with just about everything in the wardrobe. Stone or biscuit chinos, as photographed, make a particularly handsome combination; mid-grey and charcoal flannels will take it comfortably towards collar and tie. Navy cords work beautifully, as will olive or lovat moleskins when something more country is wanted.
Above the waist, blue Oxford is difficult to improve upon. Cream and blue Tattersalls would also be excellent, while navy, burgundy and dark green all work for knitwear and ties. Below, we’d favour country brogues or a well-polished dark brown shoe.
And underneath all that versatility is the reason the jacket works so well: Gurteen’s Regular Cobham cut.
