Blue is perhaps the most useful colour in a gentleman’s wardrobe, but it needn’t always be plain navy. The mélange of the wool gives this Cobham a wonderfully rich slate-blue ground, while the fine herringbone only becomes apparent at closer quarters. Then comes that discreet burgundy check, adding just enough warmth and interest.
It is an excellent cloth for wearing with just about everything in the wardrobe. Stone or biscuit chinos, as photographed, make a particularly handsome combination; mid-grey and charcoal flannels will take it comfortably towards collar and tie. Navy cords work beautifully, as will olive or lovat moleskins when something more country is wanted.
Above the waist, blue Oxford is difficult to improve upon. Cream and blue Tattersalls would also be excellent, while navy, burgundy and dark green all work for knitwear and ties. Below, we’d favour country brogues or a well-polished dark brown shoe.
And underneath all that versatility is the reason the jacket works so well: Gurteen’s Regular Cobham cut. Comfortable through the body, properly proportioned and beautifully balanced, it has the easy masculine line one wants from a country jacket rather than the abbreviated silhouette of fashionable tailoring.
A very good blue jacket, in other words – and rather more interesting than the norm.

Gurteen – English tailors since 1784
We have long admired Gurteen for producing properly tailored English menswear at remarkably sensible prices. Established in Suffolk in 1784, the family firm has been making cloth and clothing for more than two centuries and remains family run today. There is a reassuringly traditional quality to their tailoring – good cloths, proper construction and comfortable, masculine cuts – which is precisely why Gurteen has become such a favourite with CountryClubuk Members.
