The new-season Gurteen Cobham Jacket in Taupe Brown & Navy Check – an elegant country jacket to wear with almost anything

The Cobham is a jacket one can wear a great deal. The pure wool has the substance and drape one wants from a proper country jacket, while Gurteen’s Regular fit gives the jacket an excellent tailored line without cutting it too close.

The proportions are particularly good. There is comfortable room through the chest and body, but the jacket remains beautifully balanced: neat through the shoulder, handsome across the lapels and clean through the two-button front. The side vents allow it to fall properly whether standing or seated. It looks like a proper jacket because it is cut like one.

The cloth is equally well judged. From a few paces the jacket reads as a handsome, muted taupe-brown; closer inspection reveals the mélange of the wool and that restrained navy check. It is a clever combination. The brown gives warmth and character, while the navy brings just enough definition and makes the jacket particularly easy to wear with blue.

Which brings us to the wardrobe. Grey flannels would be excellent, as would navy chinos, cords, moleskins and good dark denim. A blue Oxford shirt is almost made for it; cream, blue or green Tattersalls will take things further into the country. When collar and tie are called for, we’d follow the photograph and reach for a navy knitted tie. Add a good pair of brogues and there is little else to think about.

Properly tailored, pure wool and in a colour that works with an extraordinary amount of what a gentleman already owns, the Cobham is likely to spend considerably more time being worn than hanging in the wardrobe.
