Chateau Moncets Lalande de Pomerol 2017 is a fine example of the character, depth, complexity and age-worthiness of Merlot-based fine Bordeaux wines—and in this case, without the expensive price tag.
The Château Moncets vineyards march with Fleur de Petrus at more than £200 a bottle, and Château Gazin at £100 a bottle. At less than £20 a bottle delivered through the Club, this Château Moncets offers Members remarkable value. It’s a wine you will be proud to serve to even your most discerning guests!
The wine is made from the oldest vineyards on the Moncets-Chambrun estate, vines averaging 40 years over 44 acres first cultivated in 1770. Général de Moncets bought it in 1872, and a decade ago French family owners took it over and transformed the vines and cellars, converting to organic farming. In order to produce wines of excellence, the Bordeaux oenologist Thomas Duclos.
The wine is exceptional: smooth on the palate and filled with juicy dark cherry notes and ripe berry power, with vibrancy and crisp acidity. Complex and deep, with well-integrated oak tones, spiciness, and touches of grassy floral notes, this is an elegant Bordeaux blend in a vintage curtailed by frost. The resulting wines tend to be aromatic In general, with character, punchy dryness and minerality.
Writes the famous critic Roger Voss of Château Moncets 2017 in Wine Enthusiast, ‘This Merlot-dominated wine is ripe, with generous tannins. It also has great freshness along with rich blackcurrant fruits, still developing. Drink from 2021.’
Note Gilbert & Gaillard: ‘Deep ruby-red with youthful highlights. Nose of ripe fruits with violet and pepper notes. Intense, ample, structured attack. Silky, well-integrated tannins. Lively, refreshing finish. Serve with grilled red meats.’ And from the world’s leading sommelier, Andreas Larsson: ‘Medium deep colour with a purple hue. Floral nose with sweet red fruit aromas and mild spices. Medium weight on the palate with a rounded texture, savoury red fruit flavours with a nice freshness underneath and a finely spicy finish.’
The Club Tasting Panel agree with the critics and highly recommend this delicious Lalande de Pomerol to Members—and knowing the smaller production, advise early purchase as availability will become scarce and the price will increase. The blend of 86% Merlot (which gives this beautiful roundness) and 14% Cabernet Franc (for the brilliance, depth and floral dimension so refined) is spent in French oak barrels for 16 months (including 25% new wood), giving it a gorgeous character and complexity.
It is delicious with rare roast beef, lamb, osso bucco and the like, and as such it is already listed and drinking well in the Pomerol lists of distinguished restaurants including Launceston Place (at £80 a bottle).
It will continue to drink beautifully and improve for a decade or more. Buy enough to drink now and also cellar some bottles over the coming years, until 2030 or beyond. Case of 12 bottles. Non Members £350. CCUK £239. Free UK mainland delivery.
