Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer produce excellent wines from ancient vines in Poysdorf in Austria’s Weinviertel—so much so that they took the ‘Winemaker of the Year 2022’ title from the influential German wine critics, Falstaff.
Notes Jancis Robinson MW, awarding a high 17/20: ‘Bürsting Gruner: vines planted in 1958 on gravelly soil. 12 hours on the skins in the press. 70% fermented in French oak. Rich and creamy on the palate without any loss of acidity. Deep-fruited without being fruity. Powerful and mouth-watering at the same time.’
This wine offers complexity and elegance. Dry and full of flavour, it is quite simply one of the most impressive the Tasting Panel have tried at this price. It is medium-dry, medium-bodied, with delicious apple flavours and peppery notes, fresh acidity and excellent balance.
Grown in Poysdorf’s Freiberg and Ebenthal vineyards, this Grüner Veltliner benefits from the area’s warmer climate and by being produced using certified organic farming methods. The Ebner-Ebenauer winemaking philosophy emphasises fruit and elegance. Following a brief skin contact period (five hours), the wine is pressed and fermented using cultured yeasts. It then spends three months on fine lees, adding depth to its character before filtration.
It is perfect with white fish with herb accompaniments, such as grilled sea bass with lemon and herbs, with smoked ham, smoked fish, schnitzel, salads and young cheeses. Its herbal tones of the grape allow it to also match beautifully with dishes that contain herbs, especially tarragon, parsley, dill and mint, and it is delicious with mushroom risotto, and with dishes including courgettes.

Marion and Manfred Ebner-Ebenauer are an award-winning duo at the helm of Ebner-Ebenauer, nestled in Austria’s Weinviertel. Utilizing a kaleidoscope of terroirs across 38 vineyards, they produce singular expressions of each grape variety that reflect their unique growing conditions.
Ebner-Ebenauer’s roots are as deeply embedded in history as their old vines, centred on a 400-year-old winery. It began with Manfred Ebenauer, who became a winemaker under his father’s guidance.
