About Charles Heidsieck, the House:
At just 29 years of age, Charles-Camille Heidsieck decided to create his eponymous House in 1851. Despite being an heir – the Heidsiecks were one of the most respected families in the Champagne world – he decided to forge his own path and establish his own dynasty, eager to embark on his own entrepreneurial journey.
Based in the great city of Reims, Charles Heidsieck is one of the few Houses that are able to use the fabulous chalk ‘crayères’ cellars under the city. The ‘crayères’ were hollowed out during Gallo-Roman times so that the chalk could be used for building. These cellars now provide a perfect atmosphere for the ageing of Champagne.
The entire Charles Heidsieck range is excellent from the Brut Réserve right up to the luxury cuvées Blanc des Millénaires (all of which are available to our Members at advantageous prices). A great believer in the ageability of fine Champagne, Charles Heidsieck ensure that their luxury cuvées drink well for decades.
In 2022, Charles Heidsieck was one of the first Grand Marques, alongside Piper-Heidsieck, to achieve B-Corp Certification, illustrating an ongoing commitment to improving both their social and environmental impact on the planet. The House embraces a simple, quality-focused winemaking philosophy, which is particularly evident in the ‘Brut Réserve’. For this cuvée, grapes are sourced from 60 different ‘crus’ across the region, with fermentation and ageing of the base wines undertaken primarily in stainless steel to preserve freshness. The final blend comprises 40% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier, including 50% reserve wines with an average age of 10 years. The ‘Brut Réserve’ is then aged on its lees, in bottle, for at least three years before release. These elements create an expression that is more ‘Premium Cuvée’ than ‘Brut Réserve’, which accounts for its success at competitions.
The Brut Réserve NV is a radiant pale gold colour with fine, persistent bubbles. The nose is characterised by complex pastry aromas, with an opulent combination of ripe apricot, mango, greengages, dried fruits, pistachio and almond. The palate begins with a silky-smooth sensation, developing into ripe fleshy apricot, melon and enticing plum pastry notes and delicate spice. There is perfect balance of freshness and generosity.
