Gold Medal, Selections Mondiales des Vins
One of Decanter’s ‘Ten crus bourgeois recommendations’, this hidden gem is Château Larose Trintaudon 2019. It is a racy, full-bodied, well-structured wine with enormous density and power, elegance and complexity. Its vineyards neighbour the illustrious Château Latour, unrivalled producer of the world’s greatest Grands Crus wines. Among its clutch of international accolades: Gold in the Selections Mondiales des Vins and Silver in the International Wine Challenge and 93/100 points from James Suckling.
Château Larose Trintaudon has a long pedigree, dating back to 1719. Nestled between the communes of Saint-Julien-de-Beychevelle and Pauillac, the 190-hectare vineyard of Château Larose Trintaudon is planted upon one of the oldest layers of Médoc gravel, called the ‘Pyrenean layer’. Situated on the borders of the Pauillac and Saint-Julien Appellations, it benefits from very similar growing conditions as its neighbour Château Latour.
The wine is a brilliant colour, beautiful intense ruby. On the nose, delicious crunchy red fruits with strawberries and red currants. It has beautiful freshness and balance, with great purity, a lovely roundness and silky tannins.
Wine Enthusiast, 91-93. ‘Always a reliable wine, this is a fine summation of the vintage. Poised between fresh black currant fruits and some serious tannins, it has plenty of potential. The wine’s crisp edge will keep it bright and vibrant as it develops over the medium-term.’
Notes Decanter naming this one of their recent ‘Ten crus bourgeois recommendations’: ‘A subtle, intriguing and approachable Cru Bourgeois, starting to show some development on the nose with briary, sous-bois characters emerging. Less black fruit in style, with red-cherry and damsons on the palate combined with brisk acidity, balancing the generous, fleshy fruit weight. The highly-distinctive château of Larose-Trintaudon dominates this substantial vineyard of alomost 200ha. There is a real focus on sustainability and the environment here. Part of the Vignobles de Larose.’
James Suckling awards a high 93/100points, noting, ‘A fine, linear red with currants, blackberries and some chocolate and hazelnuts. Medium to full body. Medium round tannins. Pretty finish..’ Notes Decanter: ‘A Cru Bourgeois Superieur giving a good display of understated Médoc charm. Blackberry and black cherry fruits, firm tannins, well measured with an elegant frame. Violet edges to the colour also suggesting bright acidities. Great potential to develop over the next few years in bottle.’
