Stroll into Claridge’s Hotel and one cannot help but feel elated. There’s something about the atmosphere here—not only is this a Mayfair palace from the Art Deco era, just waiting for Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn to waltz across the famous black-and-white tiled marble floor, it’s the setting for current pleasures: fine dining, music, theatre, art and West End shopping are all around us, and soon it will be Christmas! To stay at Claridge’s and enjoy London is a dream holiday without setting foot on a plane.
This supremely elegant hotel is currently ranked 1st in UK in The World’s 50 Best Hotels, which is no surprise: it has been part of the English good life for decades, an Art Deco masterpiece favoured by royalty and the most distinguished figures of every generation. Yet Claridge’s is light on its feet: it seems to retain a youthful vigour despite its years. Recently it has been restyled—venturing to open a new spa with a pool—retaining all that 1930s glamour, the style, the ambience and comfort of rooms and suites just waiting to welcome us! These are all more spacious than most, even the starter categories of Superior Kings and Queens. They rise through the ranks towards a bevy of the most glorious suites and penthouses, with roof-top views, antique furniture, and in some cases, a grand piano. Claridge’s is how life should be lived. The service is faultless, almost unbelievably so until you experience it once again for yourself.
Meanwhile glamorous Claridge’s Restaurant is back to its original inhouse status. Moving on from the confines of celebrity chefs it is uniquely Claridge’s and glamorous Art Deco again, a palatial yet understated interior of Calcutta Viola marble and antique brass, mosaic floors and leather banquettes recreating the Claridge’s atmosphere, with British menus which appear to be classics but as with the rest of the hotel, have a unique and sophisticated style and flavour. A recent attraction, L’Epicerie at Claridge’s, allows dining within the hallowed kitchens.
As for Claridge’s Bar, it is simply one of London’s hottest spots, up there among the world’s best bars. Few luxuries in life are quite like settling in at Claridge’s Bar with a glass of one’s chosen Champagne. Then there is The Fumoir, discreetly tucked away, and where those in the know have enjoyed a quiet drink since 1929. A more recent extravagance, The Painter’s Room, is a stylish hideaway with dreamy décor and exceptional cocktails. And a fresh new Artspace Café has appeared; with its own entrance on Brook’s Mews. All are redolent of luxurious living, fine dining and inimitable style, in the Claridge’s atmosphere of grace and charm.
