95/100 – James Suckling
92/100 – Eric Guido
Rich and opulent, Pieropan ‘La Rocca’ is rightly renowned as the finest of all Soave wines—and one which you will ind in the august cellars of the Michelin Star Ritz Restaurant. It is delicious—a silky, textured and complex white from the Veneto in north-east Italy. This gorgeous 2020 vintage is golden yellow, with intense, concentrated perfumes which follow through to the palate. Classic ‘La Rocca’ aromas of almond essence and honey lead to an elegant and beautifully balanced palate, with notes of vanilla and almond kernel, ripe apricots and exotic fruit, and along finish.
Pieropan are a top producer in Soave. Their wines express the full potential of the Garganega grape. This wine is from grapes grown in their La Rocca vineyard, which has a local microclimate which helps produce wines with a distinctive perfume and unique character, great personality and unique characteristics. After fermentation in a mix of stainless steel and 500 litre oaks casks, part is further aged in oak for a year before bottling. A golden yellow in the glass it’s full of exotic fruit and nutty aromas which follow to the palate, which has a real elegance and balance. The hints of spice and minerally backbone at the lengthy end give it a satisfying finish. It is 100% organic.
Notes connoisseur James Suckling, awarding an impressive 95/100 points: ‘A complex, layered and creamy Soave with aromas of flint, smoked almonds, nutmeg, charred lemon, grilled pineapple and thyme. Medium to full body. There’s so much going on, from subtle spice to ripe citrus and buttery, creamy undertones. Long and compact. From organically grown grapes.’
Notes Eric Guido: ‘A deep golden colour captures the eye long before the 2020 Soave Classico La Rocca can captivate with its sweetly-scented mix of white flowers, crushed almonds, apple and hints of vanilla custard. It’s texturally deep and opulent in feel, yet this impresses even more with its saline-mineral core and vivid blend of baked pear offset by sour melon. The 2020 La Rocca leaves a staining of primary concentration, along with hints of candied lime that seem to fizzle upon the senses. There is so much balanced pleasure to be found here. No rush, there is easily a decade of evolution in store.’
‘La Rocca’ has legendary keeping qualities. Perfect with smoked salmon, with black truffles in a creamy sauce, and so much else. It makes an excellent partner to complex dishes, even with strong flavours, particularly risottos such as porcini, or celery, squash and almond, salt cod and other fish including salmon, scallops and crab. Serve at 12-14°C. This is a magnificent wine, and one the Club Tasting Panel heartily recommend Members try—particularly at this exceptionally advantageous Club price.
