Piper-Heidsieck is not only an illustrious name in Champagne, founded in 1785 in Reims, it is also one of Champagne’s hottest names right now, winning awards and accolades from the critics. This, the Essentiel Cuvée Réservée Extra Brut, is a multi-vintage, multi-award-winning Champagne epitomising the essence of the House style. It is one of The Ritz Sommelier’s hand-picked ‘wine gems’ at £135 a bottle.
Carefully made in extremely limited quantities, this Champagne offers a compelling alliance between slowly-matured and young wines, all aged in the cellars for at least four years, the slow maturation creating a round and vibrant Cuvée Brut recalling the rich variety of its blend of 100 crus from across Champagne. It’s a magical marriage of creamy expansiveness, almond and ripe stone fruits, with a searing mineral and citrus core, the low dosage helping to propel that ozone-freshness of the finish. Terrific Champagne, it has cellaring potential of 10 years or more.
The awards say it all. Champagne guru Tom Stevenson ranks Piper-Heidsieck as one of Champagne’s five most under-valued Houses, and our Tasting Panel agree—particularly at the exclusive preferential Club price for this real gem of a Champagne.
Pinot Noir 50%, Pinot Meunier 30%, Chardonnay 20%. Perfect food pairings: turbot with beurre blanc, sea scallops with creamy parmesan risotto, roast poultry.
