Francois Merlin St-Joseph 2021:
Nose showcases cracked black pepper, clove, sandalwood, smoky hints, violets, and fresh blueberries
Palate reveals pure, elegant fruit with pronounced concentration and a touch of nutmeg
Integrated tannins and fresh acidity bring balance and energy
Overall, a refined, vibrant, and balanced St-Joseph
in the vineyard
Located on the northernmost tip of the renowned Saint-Joseph appellation
Vineyard altitude sits at 300m above sea level. This altitude provides a reprieve from the intense heat of the Rhône, contributing to the wine’s lifted and fragrant character
Predominantly planted with Syrah, known for producing rich and aromatic wines
Grown in sandy soils, which can stress the vines, resulting in more concentrated fruit flavours
Merlin planted his initial St-Joseph vines in 1989, under the mentorship of the notable René Rostaing
in the winery
Merlin showcases lush fruit flavours with masterful precision
Traditional fermentation occurs in open-top vessels using indigenous yeasts
Ageing is carefully managed in aged barrels
Despite regional climate challenges, the wines exhibit pronounced depth and minerality

94 PTS DECANTER – “Gorgeously fresh, aerial nose, brimming with violets and pounded blueberries. A touch of nutmeg adds to the scent. Smooth, rounded, and surprisingly sweetly approachable for a 2021 St-Joseph….Wonderful energy, vibrancy and balance here, a real winner among 2021 St-Josephs.” – Matt Walls – Decanter
18/20 – JANCIS ROBINSON – “Tasted blind. Fascinating nose, cracked black pepper, clove, sandalwood and spice with a subtle ashy smoky note. Great purity of fruit on the palate, light and elegant but with great concentration. Really beautiful seamless tannins and fresh acidity that gives such energy through the wine. Very elegant, restrained and refined. Wonderful.” – Alistair Cooper MW – JancisRobinson.com
