This is a gem of a red Burgundy which Jancis Robinson MW—an exceptionally great but notably low-scoring wine critic—ranks 16/20, which for Jancis is considered rather high!

It is indeed a delicious wine, an open, fruity and savoury Old Vine Pinot Noir showing red fruits, balanced acidity and soft texture. It is the Bourgogne Vieilles Vignes 2022 from the illustrious Domaine du Château Philippe le Hardi, its château once the majestic stately home of the first Duke of Burgundy, son of the King of France, and one of Burgundy’s most prestigious producers. He it was who decreed that only Pinot Noir could be grown in producing red wines in the Côte d’Or, thereby laying the foundations of Burgundy’s fine wine reputation and wealth.

This 2022 Bourgogne Pinot Noir Vieilles Vignes is excellent, fruit-driven, savoury and delicious, with both power and depth. Velvety tannins coat the palate and a lively acidity carries the flavours on to the juicy finish. Its ripe red fruits are complex and layered, with a crisp, juicy aftertaste.

Made from vineyards chosen for their south-eastern exposure and their location in the middle of the hillside for optimal maturity and complexity. The soils are rich in red clays with a marked presence of limestone.

This wine is excellent, and punches way above its price, even at full retail—so the Club Tasting Panel suggest that Members order it now before it sells out!
