One Aldwych London: best rates saving hundreds of pounds a night at this superb five-star hotel in Covent Garden: beautiful, with supreme personal service, it’s a delight to stay in this stunning independent hotel

A stylish, welcoming and tranquil retreat from the bustle of Covent Garden—and only a few minutes’ walk from the delights of the Royal Opera House—One Aldwych is a privately owned five star hotel which occupies the grand Edwardian building that was once home to the Morning Post newspaper and, more recently, Lloyds Bank. And behind its iconic Edwardian facade is a warm welcome which stops at nothing to make your stay a real pleasure. This is one of those hotels where Members, once introduced, fall in love with and constantly return. We believe our Club rates to be the best available anywhere. You will be saving hundreds of pounds in a single night’s stay—and the hotel is a delight in which to stay.

Now beautifully refurbished, the sleek, contemporary furnishings work well with the original classical detailing. The stylish, unconventionally shaped Edwardian building contains exceptionally large bedrooms for London, decked out in original Mary Fox Linton designs and a host of ingenious additions. The corner suites are stunning, with windows on two sides and views across Waterloo Bridge and the River Thames.

The street level bar is a haven of refreshment and art—from contemporary paintings to the Boatman with Oars sculpture by André Wallace, a symbol of the hotel’s independence. Everything in the lobby bar is arranged with elegance and attention to detail, from the towering floral displays—of The King’s favourite delphiniums during the Coronation—to the inscriptions on the tables, featuring news pages from The Morning Post archives. The cocktails are superb, including the One Dom, mixed from botanical vodka and Normandy Dom Benedictine with Italian lemons and honey from beehives on the hotel roof—referred to on all menus as ‘ One Aldwych rooftop honey’!

Award-winning executive chef Dominic Teague presides over Indigo, creating fresh, seasonal British classic dishes from ingredients sourced from the UK’s best independent producers. His creations are delicious (and gluten free without in any way detracting from their sublime flavours). A La Carte offers everything from Irish Rib-Eye steak to Dorset crab, Cornish monkfish and Day Boat Devon Fish in Beer Batter. His Foraged Tasting Menu, may feature delights from roast Orkney scallops with woodland sorrel and lobster bisque to cannon of Rhug estate lamb with crispy sea purslane. There is even a Cornish Tasting Menu—and don’t miss the One Aldwych Rooftop Honey Parfait with poached pears among the scrumptious puddings, from Yorkshire rhubarb to Bakewell tart! For a pre-theatre dinner, One Aldwych is extremely popular, with a choice of two or three courses, and a location just a few minutes’ walk to the Royal Opera House and theatreland.

Breakfast is another feast, free-range Suffolk sausages, Lincolnshire potato rosti, Cumbrian ham and Scottish smoked salmon among a host of fruits, muffins, porridge, hash browns, buttermilk waffles, eggs of all descriptions and bakery confections—plus fresh-squeezed fruit juices including the One Aldwych Green Juice. Afternoon tea features Charlie and the Chocolate Factory among the Champagne afternoon tea selection.

For good living, the Health Club’s therapists use products from leading British skincare brand Oskia, and Spanish skincare specialist, Natura Bissé, to enhance their treatment options. There is a sauna sauna and steamroom, the gymnasium is open 24-hours—and the 18-metre swimming pool is a delight, with soft mood lighting and an underwater music system.

Added to all these exceptional services and attractions, One Aldwych welcomes small to medium sized dogs.
