Founded in 1751, when the Port trade was dominated by British shippers, Ferreira is the oldest Portuguese Port house and remains the leader in the Portuguese domestic market. It was under the leadership of Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, one of the formidable widows of the world of wine, that the company became the force it is today. As with several important figures in the history of Champagne, she was widowed young, and took control of the family business with a gusto few of her male counterparts could match. The Douro benefited both viticulturally and socially from her various projects, and Ferreira remains blessed with a superb range of vineyard holdings from which to craft their range of full, elegant ports.
Pale tawny in colour. The nose is brimming with evolved flavours of dried figs and apricots, roasted hazelnuts, baking spice and toffee. A wine of great elegance, there is a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity on the palate and the complex flavours develop on the exceptionally long finish.
The awards panel tasting connoisseurs sum up this 20 Year Tawny Port thus: ‘Deep garnet amber colour. Youthful still with liquorice and vanilla on the nose and palate. Creme brule core with a very silky, fresh finish.’ Wine Enthusiast add: ‘Attractive tawny colour with coppery hues. Its intense bouquet shows the character of a well-balanced maturing through oxidation: nuts, spices and a hint of dry fruit and marmalade. In the mouth it is a full-bodied, delicate, soft, velvety and lingering wine. In spite of its age it has well-balanced freshness, a consequence of the refreshing with younger wines carried out through its maturation.

Ferreira Dona Antonia 20 Year Old Tawny Port
Since 1751, the Ferreira name has been synonymous with high-quality Portuguese wine. The brand’s history is intertwined with the history of the evolution of the Douro Region (demarcated in 1756) and its port and table wines (Douro DOC). The Ferreira family patriarch—who already owned vineyards that subsequently became a part of the Douro Specified Region—started his business in the mid 18th century. However, the company’s foundations stem from the actions of his grandsons, José Bernardo and António Bernardo in the early 19th century, when they added considerably to the land they had inherited. The marriage between their offspring, cousins António Bernardo II and Antónia Adelaide, would, in the next generation, consolidate a unique heritage and indelibly mark Ferreira’s future—Dona Antonia in particular.
Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira, better known by the affectionate name of Ferreirinha, was born in 1811 and widowed while still young. Thanks to the rare combination of vision, courage, independence of spirit and entrepreneurship, she developed the family business impressively, becoming the owner of the largest agricultural heritage of the Douro and owner of one of the largest fortunes in the country. After her death her heirs established in 1898 ‘Casa Ferreirinha’ , whose purpose was to produce, age and market the wines from the grapes of the different farms of the family, today the denoted Ferreirinha, the pioneer and leading brand of non-fortified wines in the Douro.
Today Francisco, Luísa and Jaime are linked to the management of the company, each in their own role, and share the same passion for wine. From one harvest to the next they respect tradition and keep an open mind to innovation. The whole Olazabal family brings their enthusiasm and contributes to perpetuate Dona Antónia’s project of making Quinta do Vale Meão a model Quinta in its own time.
