Here is an excellent Lussac Saint-Emilion red Bordeaux from a good vintage, made under the eye of Hubert de Bouard of Château Angelus. This, the Château Lyonnat 2016, is another superb wine. It is drinking beautifully, it is applauded by the critics, it ages superbly and displays class and structure that many Saint-Emilion wines would be proud of. It is classic Bordeaux, a great find, and at this Club price it’s a steal.

Lyonnat is a centuries-old estate noted for producing wines of outstanding quality. This, the 2016, is deep garnet with a warm spiced bread and red fruit character, powerful, yet supple, with vanilla aromas on the finish. It is hailed by the critics:

This delicious wine, a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, is carefully made—even down to hand sorting the grapes—at Chateau Lyonnat in the south-eastern part of Lussac Saint-Emilion, from parcels of old vines growing on limestone and clay soils. The château is owned by the famous Milhade family. skilled Bordeaux winemakers since 1938, who have in their portfolio some of the most venerable châteaux and vineyards in Lalalande-de-Pomerol and Puisseguin-St-Emilion as well as Lussac-St-Emilion.

Velvety smooth, with a lingering finish and excellent structure and balance, it is drinking beautifully now and will improve in the cellar for up to 15 years.

This classic Bordeaux pairs with roast beef and lamb, with meaty or spicy casseroles, with cheese and pears, and much else—one reason why it is on the wine list at top London restaurants including Pollen Street Social, where it is in a small selection which includes Château Lynch-Bages and Château Talbot, and even a half bottle is £38!
