Etienne Sauzet, in the village of Puligny-Montrachet, is considered one of Puligny’s finest domaines. The wines are some of the most sought-after, models of intensity and balance, and as with this excellent 2020 Hautes Côtes de Beaune Blanc ‘Jardin du Calvaire’, all about minerality, precision and great length.
Burgundy 2020 is shaping up to be a superb vintage, and Etienne Sauzet’s 2020 ‘Jardin du Calvaire’ is a fine example. In keeping with Etienne’s signature style, it has a very precise, fresh nose with notes of citrus, white flowers and delicate mineral undertones. On the palate, there are notes of white pepper, vanilla and herbs. It has a lively acidity with a long saline finish.
Established in the 1920s, now in its fourth generation, Etienne Sauzet is renowned for making immaculate wines. The biodynamically cultivated vineyard is planted at an altitude of 450 metres, at the end of a steep path called ‘la route du Calvaire’ (the Calvary route, an indication of its steepness). The soils are a mixture of clay, sand and limestone. The portion of new oak in the cellar has been reduced in recent years to allow the elegance of the fruit to shine through.
Wines of this power and texture require full bodied, classical food pairings. This 100% Chardonnay is perfect with roast chicken, turkey and guinea fowl, and with any rich fish such as salmon, or white fish served with a butter or hollandaise sauce, equally with pork. For a Puligny-Montrachet of this class, the Club price is exceptional.
