To score a Platinum Medal in the prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards is an accolade awarded to few wines in the world. For example, only 1% of the 16,518 wines blind tasted by the world’s leading Masters of Wine and Master Sommeliers achieved this honour this year, most going to Italy, France and Spain. But this year our 2021 vintage Argentinian Malbec, Amalaya, from Calchaquí Valley Salta, achieved 95/100—Platinum Medal status—and it is sensational, particularly at the CountryClubuk price.
The DWWA judges noted: ‘Perfumed, attractive nose with layers of spice, crunchy strawberries, ripe red plums and fresh violets. This intense, fruit-driven wine is from high altitude vineyards in Cafayate in the heart of the Calchaquí Valley, the highest wine region in the world. The climate is very dry, with just 150 millimetres of rain in an average year and huge temperature fluctuations of around 20°C. The soils are rocky, poor and sandy so the roots of the vines are forced to dig deep to find the vital nutrients and water they need, which results in fruit with highly concentrated flavour.
This wonderful winery has a knack of translating the breathless altitude, rugged landscape and fierce sun into intense yet balanced wines.
It is a perfect wine for herby and tomato-based dishes, with meat baked with roasted vegetables, pasta with ragu, potato and meat pie, pizza, eggs fried crispy or served as omelettes, as well as with dark chocolate.
85% Malbec, 10% Tannat, 5% Petit Verdot. Alcohol level: 13.9%.

Tasting notes, Malbec vintage 2021:
Malbec crafted with high altitude organic grapes from Fincas Las Mercedes with outstanding contributions of Tannat and Petit Verdot. This fresh Malbec with soft tannins is truly packed with all the magical high vibrations of this desert oasis. Brilliant ruby colour with violet edges. Strawberries, raspberries and ripe fruit with touch of pepper and spices aromas and elegant floral notes. In mouth, flavours of red fruit, spice and hints of vanilla from aging in French oak. Very nice freshness. Round, soft tannins lead to a delicate, lingering finish.

This wine is made with grapes from Las Mercedes Estate, sandy soil and very poor in organic matter. Mechanical harvest and aging in barrels of 25% of the wine with contributions from Tannat and Petit Verdot.
