Pieropan Calvarino is one of the wines that changed the world’s perception of Soave – and the newly released 2024 has received an impressive 95 points from Kerin O’Keefe.
First bottled as a single-vineyard wine in 1971, Calvarino comes from the Pieropan family’s historic vineyard in the heart of Soave Classico, acquired in 1901 and planted on ancient volcanic soils rich in tuff and basalt.
A blend of 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave, Calvarino offers a fascinating contrast to Pieropan’s richer La Rocca. Here the emphasis is on purity, precision and minerality: bright fruit and flowers, aromatic herbs and almond, underpinned by a wonderfully saline, stony character expressive of its volcanic terroir. Most importantly, the CountryClubuk Wine Tasting Panel unanimously approved the newly arrived 2024 for the Club Cellar. Pieropan Calvarino Soave Classico 2024
The Calvarino vineyard has belonged to the Pieropan family since 1901 and occupies an important place in Italian wine history. In 1971, Leonildo Pieropan chose to bottle Calvarino separately, making it one of the pioneering single-vineyard wines that helped transform the reputation of Soave. The vineyard’s ancient volcanic soils, rich in tuff and basalt, are fundamental to Calvarino’s distinctive mineral character.
Made from 70% Garganega and 30% Trebbiano di Soave, from organically cultivated vines, the grapes are hand-picked, often in two passes to select the ripest fruit. Fermentation takes place at low temperature in glass-lined concrete tanks, where the wine subsequently spends 12–15 months on its fine lees, with periodic bâtonnage adding richness and complexity without obscuring the purity of the fruit.
The resulting wine is quintessential Calvarino: fresh, dry, saline and beautifully precise. Pieropan describes floral notes of elderflower, jasmine and acacia alongside yellow peach, pear, apple, pineapple and ripe citrus, followed by Mediterranean herbs, fresh almond and an iodine-like, wet-stone minerality that reflects the volcanic vineyard. The palate is direct and vertical, combining tension and structure with a long, harmonious finish.
The 2024 has been awarded 95 points by Kerin O’Keefe, while Decanter awarded a Bronze Medal. Its freshness and mineral character make Calvarino particularly versatile. Pieropan recommends it with fish and shellfish, fresh pasta, vegetable dishes and cheese soufflés, as well as the local speciality of creamed salt cod.
Serve at around 10–12°C and allow this fine Soave a little time in the glass to reveal its complexity.
