Franz Haas Pinot Grigio 2025
The vineyards of Franz Haas rise through the spectacular landscape of Alto Adige in northern Italy, where considerable differences in altitude, exposure and soil allow the estate to match individual grape varieties to particularly favourable sites. Pinot Grigio is grown at elevations ranging from approximately 350 to 800 metres, where the mountain climate helps preserve fragrance, freshness and finesse.
Franz Haas gives the variety considerable attention: fermentation takes place principally in temperature-controlled stainless steel, with a small proportion fermented in barrique, followed by maturation on the lees. The result combines freshness with unusual texture, character and complexity.
The 2025 is finely aromatic and elegant, with delicate floral notes alongside acacia, sage and freshly cut hay, touches of almond and a subtle honeyed quality. On the palate it is fresh and harmonious, with attractive fruit, good concentration and a persistent, savoury finish – a sophisticated interpretation of Pinot Grigio.
Franz Haas Pinot Grigio has established an impressive critical and restaurant pedigree. The preceding 2024 vintage received 92 points from Falstaff, while the newly released 2025 has already been reported by James Suckling at 91/100, highlighting its salty, peppery mineral character. The wine has been listed by The Dorchester over several vintages, its current 2024 vintage at £70 a bottle.
At the table, Franz Haas recommends its Pinot Grigio with pasta, rice and cereal dishes, vegetables and simply grilled white meats. We would happily extend that to shellfish, seafood and smoked salmon, while its freshness also makes it an excellent aperitif. Serve at 12–14°C, as recommended by Franz Haas, rather than refrigerator-cold, to allow its aromatic character and texture to emerge.
