Sterling silver Christening gifts are a tradition stretching back to Roman times, perhaps even before. They make a symbolic as well as charming commemorative piece from a godparent, grandparent, friend or family member. To give a silver spoon symbolises the promise of good fortune for the baby, and an egg cup represents continuation of the family line.

Each piece is handmade by the skilled traditional craftsmen silversmiths at L J Millington in Birmingham. The eggcup is spun from a single piece of silver in time-honoured fashion—then polished to a high finish before being sent to the Birmingham Assay Office where it is fully hallmarked with the prominent English sterling silver marks. The spoon is also a solid piece, in Old English ratail design.

Both pieces are perfect to display as treasured heirlooms. Perhaps they will become the first in a collection of eggcups—a study named pocillovy, from the Latin—or spoons (does anybody know the name for a spoon collector?). More likely they will become favourite items in the child’s life, and handed down through the generations.

Each can be further engraved with a message, name or birth date. The eggcup is 2 1/2in (5cm) tall.
