This is a highly rated classic Chianti Classico from Paolo de Marchi’s outstanding Tuscan estate, Isole e Olena. It is a must-try for those who appreciate complex and robust Chianti Classico wines.

The Wine Spectator critic awards 93/100, noting, ‘A complex red, with a core of cherry and strawberry fruit framed by almond, loamy earth and iron notes. Silky yet solidly built, with excellent balance and a long, fruit- and mineral-tinged aftertaste.’

The wine has complexity and a guarded power which benefits from decanting, allowing the perfume of wild strawberry and spice to develop. On the palate, it offers a velvety texture and balanced acidity, with notes of cherry, leather, and tobacco from 80% Sangiovese blended with Canaiolo and Syrah grapes.

Isole e Olena is situated in the western part of Chianti Classico, just north of the village of Castellina. Its 45 hectares of vineyard are situated between 350-450 metres above sea level, planted primarily on galestro soil. Because the western flank of Chianti is open to breezes from the sea, this is a much cooler part of the zone, resulting in wines that are lighter but more scented and elegant than many others. A dynamic approach to the vineyard, as well as to the wine-making techniques, have accompanied and guided Isole e Olena throughout its history. The vineyard follows traditional methods of winemaking, emphasising the importance of terroir and the unique characteristics of each vintage.

Notes Decanter, awarding 93 points: ‘One of Chianti Classico’s most illustrious properties, Isole e Olena was established in 1956. After more than 45 years at the helm, Paolo de Marchi sold the estate last year to luxury company EPI, which also acquired Biondi Santi in 2016. This 2020 takes some time to reveal its tempting fragrance. Wafting flint, cardamom and pepper make way for early spring blossoms and red berries. It has a graceful flow along with a sumptuousness and succulence of raspberry and red plum. Fine powdery tannins frame it. A juicy follow up to the excellent 2019.’

This full-bodied Chianti Classico 2020 red offers bramble and sour cherry notes with elegant fruit character on the palate. Fresh and energetic, this wine pairs perfectly with red meat and aged cheeses to grilled meats.
