Gold Medal – Sommelier Wine Awards
Winner of Wine Merchants ‘Top 100 Wines’
A ‘Super Tuscan’ in all but name, Poggio al Tesoro’s Il Seggio 2017, has this week been announced as the top Gold Medal in Tuscan wines at the Sommelier Wine Awards—and this beautifully crafted, deep, intense, full-flavoured wine from the prestigious Bolgheri appellation shows extraordinarily complex fruit and supple, velvety tannins. So enjoyable, drinking beautifully now and for at least 15 years, it’s here for Members in the Club Cellar at an exclusive advantageous price!
Poggio al Tessoro is a relatively new estate in Bolgheri, on the Tuscan coast, the area where most of the ‘Super Tuscan’ wines (based on Bordeaux grapes) have been produced. The 70 hectare property is owned by the Allegrini family, important producers of Valpolicella in the Veneto. The temperate coastal climate seems to produce Bordeaux-style wines with more ripeness and charm than one would expect elsewhere in Italy. This is a clear example of that style, but at a very sensible price by the standards of the area. And year after year it wins 90-plus points and accolades from the leading wine connoisseurs.
The sommelier judges scored it top Gold Medal winner, applauding the fact that their top wines were not Super Tuscans with price tags to match! The Club Tasting Panel agree: ‘Deeply coloured, with complex aromas of warm earth, leather, sun-warmed plums, spices and wild herbs, it’s full-flavoured, with concentrated dark fruit, yet wonderfully fresh and vigorous, classy and refined. Vivid and long on the palate, it has supple yet ample tannins.
Drink up to 15 years after release. Match with fillet steak, beef stroganoff or porcini mushrooms.
40% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Cabernet Franc, 10% Petit Verdot, matured for 15 months in French oak barrels (around 30% new wood).
