Bodegas Lan 2016 Gran Reserva is a top-notch award winner, recently taking Gold Medal and 96/100 points in the Decanter World Wine Awards. It comes from the top selection of the old vine, low yielding vineyards within Rioja Alta.
This wine really sings in the glass. Deep garnet-red with a ruby rim, it is complex, focused and harmoniously well-balanced, with a supremely long, lingering finish marked by aromas of black fruit and spice. Scents of plum, cherry, clove, rose, rosemary and thyme are followed on the palate by bright acidity, ripe tannins and a hint of black olives, vanilla, oak and spice.
The grapes, 97% Tempranillo and 3% Mazuelo, are meticulously hand harvested from vineyards of more than 40 years old from the Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa areas, on calcareous-clay soils. This is their most select fruit from old vines, with the complexity and harmony of long ageing.
It pairs perfectly with lamb and other roast meats and game, and is a fantastic accompaniment to cheese. And it’s on the menu at the Savoy River Restaurant by Gordon Ramsay!

LAN Gran Reserva 2016: notes
Vineyard: Vineyards of more than 40 years of age from the Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa areas. Calcareous-clay soils. Hand harvested.
Weather conditions 2016: A cold winter, followed by a rainy spring and a summer of high temperatures with a lack of rain. Exceptional weather conditions during the ripening period.
Vintage classified as ‘Very good’.
Winemaking and ageing: Hand harvested grapes. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature with prolonged maceration to ensure the adequate extraction of tannins and all the aromatic potential. Ageing in hybrid barrels made from American oak (staves) and French oak (heads) for 28 months, followed by 36 months in bottle.
