Norway has always been the home of big Atlantic salmon and the rivers of northern Norway in particular keep on producing these incredible record-breaking fish. And unlike Scotland of recent years, the salmon numbers are holding up too—especially here in the pristine far north, beyond the Arctic Circle.
Our salmon fishing consultants Colin Bradshaw and Harald Oyen, having explored and fished the length and breadth of Norway over many years, have selected the magnificent and improving river Malselva as the venue of the CountryClubuk 2021 Norway Salmon Adventure! It’s a prolific hidden gem, one of the top salmon rivers in Norway, with catch figures soaring above even the well-known Gaula and Orkla. This is the fishing you might otherwise be introduced to by top UK flyfishing agencies at less obliging rates!
This fine salmon river not only offers first-class private flyfishing, but has a charming and historic privately owned fishing hotel on its banks—host to kings and politicians, generals, novelists and renowned salmon fishers over many decades. We will have good private salmon beats on this beautiful north Norway river. The Malselva figures high on the list of top-ranking Norwegian salmon rivers. The average size of the salmon is 10lb with the chance of great Norwegian fresh 20-40 pounders. On our private beats there are classic pools, tails and runs. Here are the top six of the most recent figures (in only a three-month season): Namsen 8,860; Tana (Norwegian) 7,885; Alta 5,339; Malselva 4,591; Gaula 3,874; Orkla 3,745. Since Norway has more than 400 salmon rivers, to figure so high on this prestigious list is exceptional. See the Malselva’s superb 25-year catch statistics in the graph below—most impressive!
We shall stay at the excellent Rundhaug Hotel, which first welcomed British fishing parties in 1902. They enjoyed great sport until the Germans took over during the war and it took General Montgomery to restore order in the region—while staying at the hotel—and sport again thrived and continues to do so. In the list of great characters who have stayed at the hotel and fished these waters is Charles Ritz, who wrote about it in his book ‘A Fly Fisher’s Life’, as well as the King of Norway, film star Sonja Hennie and author Wilbur Smith, whose Norwegian fly fishing was arranged by Harald. The hotel remains a thriving and hospitable place to be, under the welcoming, hands-on ownership of Reidun Traasdahl Nilsen. The food is outstanding—the UN holds private dinners for its envoys here—and all included in our trip.
What is more, it is easy to fly there from the UK, and you do not need a car when you get there—all transport from the local Bardufoss airport to the hotel and to the fishing beats will be provided. Just bring your fishing tackle (or hire it there)!
The Malselva river flows through the county of Troms, north of the Arctic Circle in Norwegian Lapland, so you will enjoy 24-hour daylight and plenty of opportunity to catch the fish of a lifetime. Colin caught a shining 28-pounder on his last visit and that was regarded as, well, quite normal size. The river is full of big salmon and it is similar in size and character to the Tay—this is no spate river. Flooding is still possible of course, but rare, as the Malselva is lake-fed.
