This is a highly rated classic Chianti Classico from Paolo de Marchi’s outstanding Tuscan estate, Isole e Olena. It is a must-try for those who appreciate complex and robust Chianti Classico wines.

Notes the Decanter connoisseur: ‘Characteristic nuances of brushwood, currants, rosehip, strawberry and pepper. Succulent and light on its feet, the palate is judiciously concentrated with pure and persistent red berries. Taut, integrated tannins provide definition. This should give plenty of pleasure over the next eight to 10 years.;

Isole e Olena is situated in the western part of Chianti Classico, just north of the village of Castellina. Its 45 hectares of vineyard are situated between 350-450 metres above sea level, planted primarily on galestro soil. Because the western flank of Chianti is open to breezes from the sea, this is a much cooler part of the zone, resulting in wines that are lighter but more scented and elegant than many others. A dynamic approach to the vineyard, as well as to the wine-making techniques, have accompanied and guided Isole e Olena throughout its history. The vineyard follows traditional methods of winemaking, emphasising the importance of terroir and the unique characteristics of each vintage.

This full-bodied Chianti Classico 2021 red offers bramble and sour cherry notes with elegant fruit character on the palate. Fresh and energetic, this wine pairs perfectly with red meat and aged cheeses to grilled meats.

Isole et Olena Estate

The Isole et Olena Estate, run by Paolo de Marchi for 45 years, is a Tuscan property that has seen a dramatic rise in quality over the last few decades. Paolo’s family, originally from Piedmont, purchased the estate in the 1960s. His attention to detail in both the vineyard and the winery was the driving force that turned quality around. The estate was purchased by the EPI group recently, who have expertise in Tuscany, also owning the famed Montalcino estate Biondi-Santi.

The wines have Cepparello at their head (see separate entry in the Club Wine Cellar), a barrique-aged Sangiovese classified as an IGT because at the time of its creation in the 1980s a wine comprising 100% Sangiovese could not legally be labelled as Chianti.

There is also this delicious Chianti Classico and a Vin Santo, as well as some excellent wines from the Collezione de Marchi label, including a Syrah called Eremo, a Cabernet Sauvignon and a Chardonnay. All are available through the Club.
