Château Arnauld owns 17.2 hectares of vineyards which have an average age of 40 years and are farmed sustainably. The vines sit on a deep, well-draining, gravel outcrop on the edge of the Gironde River. They are planted at a density of 10,000 vines per hectare, which helps to achieve a low yield per vine and an increased intensity of flavour in the finished wine.
Decanter: ‘Delivers clear grip and poise, with an alluring depth of damson and blackberry fruit; tannins are firm but not drying, and it doesn’t feel overdone. Definite potential here. Drink now-2033.’ 91 points.
Roger Voss, ‘The producer thinks this is an important wine judging by the unusually heavy bottle. The wine is attractively rich and full bodied. With weighty blackberry fruit and a concentrated core of tannins, it is balanced, fruity and likely to age well. There is a mineral edge that will soften as the wine matures.’
The 2014 features in Vins de Bordeaux’s ‘The Hot 50’ 2021, the critics naming it a ‘Glamorous wine, now at a delightful stage of development. Ripe, concentrated fruit, complex cedary notes and an admirably fresh, dry finish.’
Chris Kissack: ‘This has a dark, perfumed and characterful nose, with some confit berry sweetness, tempered by a grainy note. It has a nicely textured palate, quite soft, supple and well integrated, the tannic backbone well buried within a moderately charming texture. This is fresh, bright, really quite correct and poised. The finish is gripped with tannin of course, but overall the composition feels very sound and balanced. Well done.’
