An impressive lineup of Gold Medal Winners in the recent 2024 Sommelier Wine Awards included our latest find from Burgundy, Domaine Corsin Saint-Véran, Vieilles Vignes 2020. Of hundreds of wines, all tasted blind, this excellent white took top honours.

Domaine Corsin has established an excellent reputation for making wines in Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé since 1864. They were among the first to label wines as Pouilly-Fuissé and Mâcon Blanc.  Today, the domaine is in its fifth generation, run by Jean-Jacques and Gilles Corsin who own 13.6 hectares of Chardonnay, of which nine are in Saint-Véran, on average 65 years old and rooted in clay-limestone soils.

This wine has a glinting light gold colour with green hues. Its complex bouquet shows aromas of fruit and white flowers, intertwined with woody notes. On the palate, this wine is full and round with a prolonged minerality and slightly acidic flavour. Awarding the Gold Medal, the Sommelier judges add:

‘With notes of honeydew melon and pear toast, this is elegant and well structured . . . would be fantastic with roast pheasant.’ ‘Lovely fresh citrus, combined with rich buttery notes—an excellent wine to see you from the start to the end of a meal.’

Sommelier food pairing with this wine: Lobster with lemon butter, seafood with citrus beurre blanc, veal with mushrooms in mustard cream sauce, pork with apples, roast pheasant and traditional dishes of Burgundy including Gougeres, escargot, roasted Bresse chicken and parsleyed ham. 100% Chardonnay. Drinking beautifully now, cellar from four to six years.

Case of six bottles. RRP £175. CCUK £139 including UK mainland delivery (courier surcharge to Highlands and Islands).
