This is how we like colour in a tweed jacket: rich, slightly unexpected and very well judged.
Gurteen’s new Oakham in Cranberry Check is particularly handsome. The deep cranberry ground is beautifully mottled with darker, earthy tones, while the restrained check gives the cloth structure and depth. There is plenty of character here, but with the quiet confidence of a really good tweed.
Just as important is the tailoring. Gurteen cut the Oakham in their Modern fit: clean and shaped through the body, but without the tightness of an overly slim jacket. The neat shoulder, well-balanced two-button front and side vents give it the line of a properly tailored jacket, while the ticket pocket adds a pleasingly traditional touch. It looks sharp buttoned, sits equally well open and has enough ease to remain comfortable throughout the day.
The photograph rather makes the case. Pale blue shirt, dark green knitted tie and green cords are splendid with it, but the Oakham will be equally happy with grey flannels, navy chinos or dark denim. Good tailoring gives the colour confidence; the pure wool tweed gives it character.
This is proper autumn tailoring – pure wool, beautifully cut and just a little more adventurous than brown or navy.

Cranberry is one of those colours which becomes considerably more useful when woven into tweed. Here the mélange of darker fibres takes away any brightness, leaving a wonderfully rich autumn cloth which sits particularly happily beside green, navy, grey and brown.
A blue Oxford shirt is an easy starting point; Tattersalls in cream, blue or green will take it further into the country. For knitwear, we’d look towards forest green, lovat, navy or oatmeal. And if a tie is called for, the dark green knitted tie shown here is very difficult to improve upon.
And then there is the cut. Gurteen’s Modern fit gives the Oakham a clean, shaped line without straying into the territory of the fashionably tight. The shoulders sit neatly, the two-button front gives good balance through the body and the side vents allow the jacket to fall properly whether standing or seated. It is a small distinction, but an important one: good tweed deserves to be properly tailored.
Distinctive without being difficult, the Oakham is precisely the sort of jacket that makes an otherwise straightforward autumn wardrobe rather more interesting.
