Stunning Lake Annecy is a beautiful pre-Alpine lake in the haute Savoie department of France, only 50 kilometres south of Geneva. Our chosen hotel in this idyllic location is a mediaeval abbey, the romantic L’Abbaye de Talloires, which stands on the lakeside in a quiet and lovely place about 20 minutes from Annecy. For the fifth consecutive year Abbaye de Talloires has been named among the four best hotels in France. It is wonderful: the scenery is divine, the location perfect, and the hotel, its grounds, its food and service are all truly special, down to the last detail.
Among the devotees of this lovely place was Mark Twain, who was enchanted by the lake, its setting, and also by the abbey. He called it ‘a revelation, a miracle’, writing: ‘It affects you just as all things that you instantly recognise as perfect affect you—perfect music, perfect eloquence, perfect art, perfect joy, perfect grief. It stretches itself out there in the caressing sunlight, and away towards its border of majestic mountains, a crisped and radiant plain of water of the divinest blue that can be imagined. All the blues are there, from the faintest shoal water suggestion of the colour, detectable only in the shadow of some overhanging object, all the way through, a little blue and a little bluer still, and again a shade bluer till you strike, the deep, rich Mediterranean splendour which breaks the heart in your bosom, it is so beautiful.’
L’Abbaye de Talloires has 33 rooms, beautifully appointed, and all the facilities you would expect, including delicious gourmet food.
