Mediterranean sun, sea, sport, spa and space: Enjoy the Award-Winning Verdura Resort in Sicily: Exclusive CountryClubuk rates, with or without Golf on Three Kyle Phillips Golf Courses!

For a peaceful and expansive five-star spa, golf, sun and sea destination in Sicily, award-winning Verdura Resort is a dream location. Set on more than 500 acres of beach-side, mountain-ringed Sicilian countryside, amid orange and olive groves and gardens, award-winning championship golf courses, and more than a mile of private Mediterranean coastline, Verdura is an oasis of cultured five-star calm. It has won international awards including being ranked among the Top 100 Resorts in Continental Europe, for its pleasures as a golf destination—Verdura is ranked within the Top 10 Golf Courses in Italy and is home to the European Tour’s Sicilian Open—and also for its palatial spa, another major award winner. It is also base for stunning helicopter rides—to the famous volcanic site of Mount Etna, the Valley of the Temples and the Aeolian Islands.

An expansive resort of sleek, luxurious hotel rooms, suites and spacious, secluded villas in the less tourist-driven south-west of Sicily, Verdura is a place to relax and unwind, alone or with the family. There is much to do: Verdura features eight excellent restaurants and bars, three golf courses, tennis courts, water sports and a luxurious award-winning 4,000 square metre spa.

Rocco Forte has spent years nurturing Verdura, a contemporary yet Moorish style hotel, while his sister Olga Polizzi has created a spacious, airy interior design which blends beautifully with the landscape and celebrates the multi-cultural influences of the island.

Verdura is set on Sicily’s calm south-western coast, 15 minutes from the seaside town of Sciacca, renowned for its Carnival and ceramics. The orange groves of Ribera lie next to the resort. Venture beyond the manicured grounds of Verdura and within a few short drives you can experience authentic Sicilian life and some of the world’s most exciting archeological sites—Agrigento, and the Valley of the Temples, is just less than an hour’s drive. Some of the best-preserved relics of Greece’s Golden Age remain here. One of eight magnificent temples, a Doric structure built in the 5th century BC, it is as iconic in appearance as the Parthenon. The capital, Palermo, is just over an hour’s drive (and home to Verdura’s sister hotel, Villa Igeia), and the Aeolian, Egadi and Pelagian islands can be reached directly from Verdura by helicopter.

This peaceful resort offers a real sense of space, where any room or suite or villa you choose will give you room to breathe, along with uninterrupted views of the sea from your private balcony or terrace, and in the highest categories, private pools. Verdura has 168 rooms, 32 suites and three villa suites, starting at the 40 square metre Deluxe room category, plus 20 new private villas, allowing plenty of choice and the ability to enjoy a secluded setting. The style is sleek and light-filled, and in-room amenities include all you expect from a Rocco Forte five-star resort, including elegant 24-hour room service so that you can enjoy private dining. Rest and relaxation are assured throughout the resort itself, along that long private beach beside the warm sea, and beyond, to the private gardens, golf courses and of course the spa.

Verdura Spa is a sand-coloured sanctuary at the heart of the resort, with four thalassotherapy pools, a 20-metre indoor lap pool, 11 treatment rooms (including a double suite) and a double-height steam bath, an infrared sauna, gym and yoga studio, sophisticated relaxation areas and a spa bar. This Sicilian luxury spa takes a holistic approach to wellbeing, with an extensive menu of treatments infused with organic Sicilian plant oils and extracts that promise to promote anti-ageing, detoxification and fitness. There are many good reasons why the spa won the top award for Best Medical Spa in the Italian Spa Awards.

Eight restaurants and bars offer variety of style. Buongiorno is the chic casual main dining room, Le Zagara is for sophisticated Mediterranean dining in the restaurant and on its terrace. Amare is the Olga Polizzi-styled beachside restaurant and bar, with fresh Mediterranean dishes and barbecued seafood. There is a trattoria, Liolà, Verdura’s colourful take on a traditional local restaurant just a golf buggy ride away at the in-resort ‘village’ of Torre Verdura. The bars are many and various, all stylish, individual destinations, from outdoor relaxed to glamorous and smart—the open-air Pool Bar, the seaene Granita lounge bar, the Torre Bar, Beach Bar, and the Spa Bar serving vitamin-packed cocktails created with fresh fruit and vegetables, to accompany light healthy dishes.

Watersports, including scuba diving, stand-up paddle-boarding, knee-boarding and kayaking, can be arranged from the jetty. Or hire one of the resort’s boats for a trip to Torre Salsa, Scala dei Turchi, Capo Bianco or Sciacca, finishing your day with a romantic sunset picnic. Riding can be arranged and the Sunball Tennis Academy holds frequent classes and tournaments—the instructors here have worked with some all-time great players.

And to crown all this, Verdura is a golfer’s paradise. One of Italy’s Top Ten Golf Courses, home to the European Tour’s Rocco Forte Sicilian Open, it has two championship 18-hole courses—the second opens this Summer—as well as a nine-hole par-three course, double-ended driving range and putting green and a Golf Academy with Perfomance Institute, a clubhouse and golf shop. Designed by Kyle Phillips, who designed the stunning Kingsbarns Links just outside St Andrews, as well as the immaculate parkland courses at The Grove in Hertfordshire. Here he has created two exciting 18-hole championship courses and a nine-hole course that meander around indigenous orange and olive groves, using terrain that undulates from mountain foothills down to the Mediterranean seashore, preserving and accentuating the essential character of the site, through his creative use of both natural and man-made landforms.

How to get there: Sicily’s Palermo airport is 83 miles from the resort, which is about 80 minutes by car, where there is free valet parking. A helicopter transfer service can be arranged.
