Domain Claude Dugat is a tiny domaine in Burgundy with cult status, and the quality to match. Widely considered one of the top producers in Gevrey-Chambertin, it is a family-run domaine, Claude and Marie-Thérèse and their children—son Bertrand and daughters Laetitia and Jeanne. The aim is to have a light touch in the vineyard. The domaine practices sustainable viticulture, never using fertilizers or herbicides. Ripeness (and harvest date) is determined solely by taste rather than by lab analysis, with the wines always having a signature freshness because they never pick late. The concentration and intensity of the wines is derived primarily from old vines and low yields. This 2014 Pinot Noir has notes of red and dark currant and sweet forest strawberries, brought forward by a quite powerful minerality, with hints of violets and peony rose. On the palate, the wine is rich, deep and balanced, very generous, with a rich, silky texture. This wine is fantastic value and has a tremendous depth and intensity. Neal Martin MW writes: ‘A moderately earthy and sauvage-scented nose offers up additional notes of both red and dark fruit along with humus nuances. There is good energy and delineation to the middle weight flavours that are shaped by relatively fine-grained tannins on the firm and ever-so-mildly austere finale.’ And Stephen Tanzer MW reports: ‘Bright dark red. Aromas of blackberry, raspberry, flowers, earth and spicy oak. Juicy, sappy, with dark fruit flavours complemented by salty minerality. Tickles the salivary glands on the finish . . . it’s a classic Gevrey villages.’ We are delighted to be able to offer our Members the wines of with this fine domaine. Volumes are limited. Pinot Noir 100%. Delicious with duck, goose and game birds. Case of six bottles.
