Chateau Moncets Lalande de Pomerol 2015 is a fine example of the character, depth, complexity and age-worthiness of Merlot-based fine Bordeaux wines—and in this case, without the expensive price tag. The Chateau Moncets vineyards march with Fleur de Petrus at more than £200 a bottle, and Château Gazin at £100 a bottle. At a mere £xx a bottle through the Club, having received all the accolades listed above, this Chateau Moncets offers remarkable value, particularly for this Gold Medal-winning vintage. The wine comes from the oldest vineyards on the Moncets-Chambrun estate, vines averaging 40 years over 44 acres first cultivated in 1770. Général de Moncets bought it in 1872, and seven years ago French family owners took it over and transformed the vines and cellars, converting to organic farming. In order to produce wines of excellence, the Bordeaux oenologist Thomas Duclos. The wine is exceptional: smooth on the palate and filled with juicy dark cherry notes and ripe berry fruit power, with vibrancy and crisp acidity. Complex and deep, with well-integrated oak tones, spiciness, and touches of grassy floral notes, this is a rich Bordeaux blend in a generous vintage, with character, punchy dryness and minerality. Writes Roger Voss in Wine Spectator, ‘This wine, hugely rich and packed with tannins, has equally powerful black fruits . . . rich texture and blackberry and licorice flavors.’

The Club Tasting Panel agree. The blend of 82% Merlot (which gives this beautiful roundness) and 18% Cabernet Franc (for the brilliance, depth and floral dimension so refined) is spent in French oak barrels for 16 months (including 25% new wood), giving it a gorgeous character and complexity. It is delicious with rare roast beef, osso bucco and the like, and as such it is already listed and drinking well in the Pomerol lists of distinguished restaurants including Launceston Place (at £74 a bottle).

It will continue to improve for a decade or more. Drinking well now, be sure to buy enough to cellar until 2022 and beyond. Case of 12 bottles. Non Members £360. CCUK £249. Free UK mainland delivery.
