With so many different uses around the garden, a decent pair of secateurs is a must for any gardener—and it seems no gardener can ever have enough of them as they are so often mislaid. They are the garden hand tool that gets the most use when pruning shrubs, cutting down herbaceous borders, deadheading and even cutting flowers for the house or harvesting fruiting crops.

Which type to buy? Bypass secateurs, with a cutting action similar to scissor blades, can get into tighter spaces, to cut near a bud or cut side-shoots back to the main stem. The Felco Compact No 6 is lighter then the No2s, and compact, with a tapered cutting head. It is recommended for all garden maintenance and pruning up to 20mm. At 19.5cm long it is perfect for a smaller hand.
