Greywacke Sauvignon Blanc 2025
Greywacke was created in 2009 by Kevin Judd, one of the pioneers of modern Marlborough wine.
Judd was the founding winemaker at Cloudy Bay and spent more than 25 years helping establish both that estate and Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc on the world stage before creating Greywacke in his own style. The name comes from the greywacke river stones found throughout Marlborough’s vineyard soils and originally used by Kevin for his first Marlborough vineyard.
Fruit for the 2025 Sauvignon Blanc comes from prime vineyards across Marlborough’s Southern Valleys and central Wairau Plains, including Woodbourne, Renwick and Rapaura. The varied soils range from young alluvial ground containing the region’s characteristic greywacke stones to the older, denser clay-loams of the Southern Valleys.
The 2025 vintage
The 2025 Marlborough harvest followed a warm, wet spring with early budburst and healthy canopies before conditions became exceptionally dry.
Sauvignon Blanc enjoyed remarkably settled flowering conditions, while the dry growing season allowed the fruit to achieve excellent ripeness and concentration.
The resulting Greywacke is wonderfully expressive while retaining the freshness and precision that are signatures of Kevin Judd’s winemaking.
Tasting note
Bright and intensely aromatic, with citrus, lime, grapefruit, blackcurrant, ripe orchard and tropical fruit, complemented by floral and subtle herbal notes.
The palate combines juicy fruit with taut acidity, flinty minerality and a gently creamy texture. A little phenolic grip adds structure and sophistication before a fresh, saline, impressively persistent finish.
This is quintessential Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc — but with an extra level of texture, precision and complexity that makes Greywacke special.
What the critics say
17/20 — Wine of the Week, Samantha Cole-Johnson, JancisRobinson.com
A beautifully classic expression of Marlborough Sauvignon, distinguished by taut acidity, attractive pithiness, texture and a particularly long finish.
93/100 — Stephen Wong MW, The Real Review
Perfumed and concentrated, with floral and sweet apple characters, linear structure, saline length and bright acidity.
5 Stars — Michael Cooper
A vibrant, fruit-driven Sauvignon with passionfruit and lime flavours, savoury complexity and a finely poised, lingering finish.
