Van Gogh Irises: ‘it strikes the eye from afar’ wrote Vincent’s brother: here it has inspired a pure silk tie by the English silk specialists Fox & Chave

Original price was: £40.00.Current price is: £23.00.

This beautiful and artistic tie is inspired by one of Vincent Van Gogh’s most renowned works, ‘Irises’. On seeing it, his brother immediately submitted it to the annual exhibition of the Société des Artistes Indépendants in September 1889, writing to Vincent: ‘It strikes the eye from afar. The Irises are a beautiful study full of air and life.’

It was among Van Gogh’s last works. He made at the Saint Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, France, in the last year before his death. Van Gogh had started painting Irises within a month of entering the asylum, in May 1889, working from Nature in the hospital garden. He called painting ‘the lightning conductor for my illness’ knowing he that by continuing to paint he could retain his sanity.

The rest is history—but when an artistic man chooses to wear this tie just some of that inspiration is surely passed on—as Vincent’s brother said, it is ‘a beautiful study full of air and life’.
