For details, read on!
The English Season, like the works of Vivaldi, is dazzling. This spectacular round of parties and sport naturally includes Henley Royal Regatta, the world’s greatest rowing regatta—and we are delighted to invite our Members to be there in a supreme Start Line bank-side position while sipping Champagne and enjoying a delicious luncheon and cocktail party. This will be a sophisticated place in which to absorb the full Henley Royal Regatta experience.
Our location is the supremely civilised Boaters Enclosure directly on the river bank at the Start Line overlooking Temple Island itself, for this, the perennial English river party. The start line is a prized position—as the experts know, races are often won and lost right at the start, and we shall be there amid the action, in the thick of it as the crews pull away in their attempts at glory.
For while Henley Royal Regatta is an extravaganza of giant young rowers, blue-and-white marquees, gentlemen wearing outrageous striped blazers, and ladies in their summer dresses, it is also of course about serious rowing: the cream of the world’s rowers will be there, from Olympic champions to schoolboys, in this the 186th anniversary of the Regatta’s founding in 1839.
Prince Albert’s visit in 1851 was enough to secure Henley its Royal title, and his son, the future Edward VII, continued the Royal favour by attending in 1887. The late Queen Elizabeth attended four times during her reign, the first aged only 20, following the Second World War. And in May last year King Charles III accepted the Patronage of Henley Royal Regatta—though it has to be said that rowing cannot be termed the Sport of current Kings!
It is however, the sport of huge swathes of athletic young men and women from across the world, and they and their entourages will descend on Henley again this year, ready to do battle. There are plenty of rules for them and for the attendees, written and unwritten—one being that if you see an irate gentleman riding a bicycle on the towpath while bellowing through a megaphone, move aside—he will be a coach engaged in training his crew.
The Regatta also provides an excuse for men to blossom forth in some of the most outrageous club gear seen outside an Edwardian music hall. It is de rigueur to sport a blazer—not just any blazer but a dazzling striped one. And men who previously were thought to be lifelong hatless types will suddenly sally forth in beribboned straw boaters. Ladies may take a tip from Sir Cecil Beaton’s stage productions—dresses to be worn long, lavish and languorous, with shady hats—this is the English Season, after all. Princess Alexandra, when she was last there as a guest, was heard to describe the style for ladies as ‘gay formal’, which, in the strictest sense of the word, just about sums it up. It is all part of Henley’s rich pattern, adding gaiety to the scene of serious rowing.
In our premium location in Boaters Enclosure we have pride of place to view the action, while enjoying a relaxed atmosphere. Lunch is at your own private table in the elegant marquee, and there will be space to breathe in the relaxed atmosphere.
Here we will enjoy to advantage some of the real pleasures of this English summer party, from the welcome Champagne reception to the four-course luncheon with fine wines, our backdrop the River Thames. And we can be sure that our surroundings, the style and service, will all be a cut above. Dress code for the gentlemen is blazers with flannels, or lounge suits or jackets, with collared shirt, tie or cravat, and for the ladies, dresses and skirts of modest length; full-length trousers are also now permitted.
We can enjoy the Regatta from Boaters Enclosure on every day of the event from Tuesday, July 1, to Saturday, July 5, from 11am to 6.30pm each day. On arrival (with on-site parking) there will be a Champagne reception and fresh canapés, followed by a delightful four-course luncheon with fine wines. A complimentary bar for beers, wines, house spirits and soft drinks is open all day, and afternoon indulgences open with a cocktail bar for the most delicious gin cocktails, and of course, afternoon tea.
It is too soon to know the exact menu, but specialities of the day may include such summer delights as smoked salmon with citrus crème fraiche, pan-seared fillet of beef with all the trimmings, chocolate and toffee mousse with berry coulis, fresh strawberries and Madagascan vanilla bean cream, and British cheeses with chutney, grapes and biscuits served with port and brandy. Then English afternoon tea menu is another delight, including all the traditional fresh sandwiches plus scones, cakes and strawberries and cream. It is strawberries, Champagne and Pimm’s that keeps Henley afloat! Plus cocktails including Long Island Iced Tea to toast the American contingent, and Pink Gin Fizz for all.
Musicians will play, and we shall be surrounded by elegant floral environs within the luxurious marquee and exclusive English garden area with informal seating on the banks of the Thames, where we can relax and enjoy the racing in style.
Henley is truly an occasion for all. If you are an ardent Regatta goer, to be there in Boaters Enclosure will add new sparkle—and if you have never experienced Henley Regatta before, this will be an excellent way to soak up the full atmosphere in style, making a wonderful day of celebration. All in all, we believe 2025 will be a truly memorable Henley Royal Regatta.
