Look closely at this lovely Fox & Chave scarf and there is far more to discover than first meets the eye.
Its principal pattern is Seaweed, designed in 1901 by John Henry Dearle, who worked closely with William Morris and became one of Morris & Co.’s most important designers. Its sinuous stems and unusual radiating plant forms evoke vegetation moving beneath the water — particularly effective here on translucent silk chiffon, where the pale blue-green colouring gives the design an airy, almost watercolour quality.
But Seaweed is only part of the story. The scarf also incorporates Marigold, William Morris’s 1875 floral design, while the broad contrasting panels towards the ends introduce his Evenlode design of 1883, named after a tributary of the Thames.
Together, the three patterns span 26 years of Morris & Co. design, yet Fox & Chave has combined them with remarkable harmony.
Made from 100% pure silk chiffon, the scarf measures approximately 180cm x 52cm and is finished with traditional hand-rolled hems. Wear it simply over a dress or jacket to display the contrasting borders, or loosely gather it around the neck to mingle its aqua, ivory, olive and warm red tones.
A particularly lovely choice for anyone who appreciates William Morris, Arts & Crafts design — or simply a beautiful silk scarf.
