CharUnder-the-Radar White Burgundy, from the southern Côte de Beaune
Maranges sits at the southern end of the Côte de Beaune—close enough to the famous names to share their limestone energy, but still priced like a discovery. Domaine Chevrot (run by brothers Pablo and Vincent Chevrot) is widely regarded as one of the village’s leading estates, farming organically and refining the domaine’s style through careful élevage and more precise vineyard work.
The terroir: steep slopes, limestone, and a cooling river influence
For Maranges Blanc 2020, Chevrot’s Chardonnay is grown on a south-facing terrace with limestone and granite gravel, on slopes around a 25% gradient. The site’s proximity to the Cozanne river helps create a broader diurnal range—supporting ripe fruit and a naturally refreshing acid line. The vineyards are organically farmed, and the domaine uses draft horses for ploughing to help protect soil structure.
The 2020 vintage: generosity with freshness
2020 in Burgundy brought warm, dry conditions and an early harvest, producing whites with mid-palate volume and texture balanced by “lovely freshness.” That’s exactly the sweet spot this wine delivers.
Winemaking: gentle handling, long élevage, measured oak
Chevrot harvests early in the morning to preserve freshness, presses gently, then ferments with indigenous yeasts. The wine goes through full malolactic fermentation and is aged for 15 months total: 12 months in French oak (15% new, a mix of larger foudres and 228L barrels), followed by 3 months in stainless steel before bottling.
Tasting profile
Expect a pale gold Burgundy with bright, precise aromatics: citrus, yellow peach and bergamot, then a palate that’s textured and generous yet lifted by acidity and finishing mineral. Burgundy-Report’s note on the 2020 Maranges Blanc captures the style beautifully: a hint of oak that “melts” into the wine’s complexity, with a long, delicious finish.
Food pairings
This is made for grilled prawns, roast chicken with lemon and herbs, crab, scallops, or creamy mushroom dishes—anything that plays with the wine’s tension between citrus-mineral freshness and almond/oak richness.
Drink window
Beautiful now with a short decant, and will reward 3–6 years in cellar for more nuttiness and savoury depth (store cool and dark).
