This delicious North Italian white wine is from the best producer in Lugana, Lake Garda, the family owned and run Cà dei Frati. This, their Brolettino 2021 is a classic—elegant, dry, full bodied, savoury and well structured. Instantly aromatic and alluring, the 2021 is a superb expression which ranks high in critical acclaim. It is drinking beautifully now and has a great capacity for ageing.

Brolettino is a characterful white wine made on the southern banks of Lake Garda from local variety Turbiana (Verdicchio). It is beautifully made—fully ripe grapes and highly productive land give great complexity and structure.

Notes Decanter, awarding 92/100: ‘This is Cà dei Frati’s barrel–aged interpretation of their Lugana. Vinified initially in stainless steel and completed in barriques, it then undergoes malo and further maturation for 10 months in barriques. Juicy in character, it features savoury and waxy spiced pear aromas and flavours at its core, fleshed out with apple, tropical fruits, wood and black pepper notes. A big, serious and food–friendly example.’

Notes Falstaff, awarding 93/100: ‘Pale straw yellow colour with silver reflections. On the nose offers nuances of white peach and elderflower, lime and a touch of flint in the aftertaste. On the palate crisp, with fine drive, rich fruit core of apricots, slightly salty on the persistent finish, still needs some time in the bottle (tasted Oct 2023).

Perfect with white meat, medium seasoned cheese, fish cooked long and well, smoked fish, shellfish, legumes,pasta with white sauces and truffles.

Drinking window: to 2027. Serve at a temperature of 10°- 12° C.

Ca’ dei Frati, the history

Ca’ dei Frati has been renowned since 1782, as confirmed by a document that refers to ‘a house with a cellar located in Lugana in the Sermion district known as the place of the Friars’. In 1939, Felice Dal Cero, son of Domenico, formerly a wine grower in Montecchia di Crosara near Verona, moved to that very house in Lugana di Sirmione, immediately realising the area’s potential for vine cultivation.

After 30 years working in the vineyard and the cellar, his son Pietro took part in the creation of the DOC in 1969, bottling his first wine with the label Lugana Casa dei Frati, later named Ca’ dei Frati. In 2012, Pietro Dal Cero passed away, leaving the cultural legacy to his wife Santa Rosa and children Igino, Gian Franco and Anna Maria, who run the company with the same passion and determination.

Considered the best winery in Lugana, Cà dei Frati produces exceptional quality wines. They train their vines low, plant at high density and reduce yields. These standout techniques produce concentrated wines with a distinctive sense of place. Outstanding vineyards are the secret to their success. Most producers in the zone crop at high levels and train the vines high. At Ca’ dei Frati, the vines are trained low. All grapes are grown in Ca’ dei Frati’s own vineyards, on the south banks of Lake Garda, near the town of Sirmione. The vines from which ‘Brolettino’ is made were planted in 1971.
