Sunier 2023: Beaujolais Brilliance, Burgundy-Bred
The Estate: Julien Sunier – Rising Star in Natural Beaujolais
Today, Domaine Julien Sunier spans around 6.5–9 hectares of meticulously farmed, predominantly old-vine parcels (average age 40–50 years) on granite-rich soils, all certified organic and tended with an agro-ecological approach that prioritises biodiversity and soil health. Based at the high-altitude (750m) La Ferme des Noisetiers in Avenas, the cool site and non-temperature-controlled cellar encourage slow, natural ferments for delicate extraction and purity.
Julien’s minimalist, natural winemaking—native yeasts, whole-bunch ferments, gentle pressing, ageing in used Roumier barrels or foudres, and minimal sulphur—produces wines of scintillating freshness, floral aromatics, and precise terroir expression. Influenced by Beaujolais pioneers like Marcel Lapierre and Jean-Louis Dutraive, Sunier has emerged as one of the region’s most exciting talents, crafting elegant, vibrant Gamays that bridge Burgundy finesse with Beaujolais energy.
His Régnié, from prized sites like Les Vergers and En Oeillat, exemplifies this brilliance: serious depth and minerality at a village-wine price point.
