The 2023 Domaine Dupeuble Beaujolais Château des Pertonnières shows why this historic family estate stands apart in the southern Beaujolais. From 42 hectares of south-facing, 50–100-year-old vines in the terres dorées around Le Breuil, the Dupeubles continue their centuries-old commitment to quality: lutte raisonnée farming, manual harvesting, wild-yeast fermentation, and bottling without fining or filtration.
In the glass the 2023 is immediately appealing. Perfumed aromas of red cherry, raspberry and violet are joined by subtle liquorice and spice. The palate is lively and precise — juicy red fruit, bright acidity and smooth, fine-grained tannins leading to a clean, lingering finish. It is medium-bodied, pure and thoroughly moreish, reflecting the vintage’s emphasis on fruit clarity and balance. It is drinking at its peak now and will remain excellent for the next year or two.
Decanter has consistently recognised the domaine’s ability to deliver “a hugely refreshing, light-bodied and cheerful Beaujolais that maintains a divine purity of red berry fruit”, previously recommending it among summer reds to drink chilled. That same purity and lift are fully present in this new release.
The Club Tasting Panel has approved the 2023 and particularly enjoys it with pork and ham, charcuterie, Mediterranean roast vegetables and herbs, and as a versatile partner for lighter meals. A light chill only enhances its refreshing character.
With a history stretching back to 1512 and a reputation for careful, natural winemaking in a region often dominated by volume production, Domaine Dupeuble remains one of the most dependable sources of high-quality, fairly priced Beaujolais.
The 2023 is a fine example — pure, energetic and ready to enjoy.
