This romantic, glorious villa provides a grand Tuscan country sojourn with easy access to one of the world’s great cultural capitals
15 minutes’ drive gets you to Florence, and even better, 15 minutes’ drive takes you back to Villa Mangiacane at the end of the day. Villa Mangiacane is an amazing 15th-century building, bearing in its décor the unmistakable hand of Michelangelo. It has been painstakingly restored by its owner, a South African, from the original designs, which are still kept in Florence’s Uffizi Gallery. These are unlikely to include the more recent additions: swimming pools, 26 luxury rooms and suites, and spa facilities. The result means the Villa’s Renaissance atmosphere, its antiques and frescoes, all come with professional service and luxury-hotel must-haves including plasma TVs, Wifi and marble bathrooms.
The Villa stands within its own 600-acre vineyard and olive estate, and has appropriately exalted views over the Tuscan countryside to the Renaissance skyline of Florence. This, and the relaxed nature of the establishment (it is managed by the same international group responsible for Amsterdam’s College Hotel and Château Eze in the south of France) allows guests an easy time—one feels more like the invited guest of a private villa owner than an hotel occupant.
Take, for instance, the many options for dining and relaxation, allowing you to choose to eat al-fresco in the fragrant herb garden, or in the vaulted wine cellar, even within the olive groves or by the roaring fire in the villa kitchen, should you prefer a setting other than the main restaurant; and no matter where you choose, the executive chef keeps the cuisine—Tuscan, with a modern twist—in fine form. And for pampering, the Nadushka Spa (currently being refurbished) comes with indoor pool, steam and sauna, and a small fitness room.
One of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and highly rated by its guests, the villa has five styles of suite and three bedroom categories. All are exquisite—beautiful and original, and decorated with antiques and art works and with excellent modern facilities—but for gracious living the suites in the main Villa are exceptional. Some have private gardens with plunge pools, and the split-level suites have terraces with fabulous views towards Florence.
Take, for example, the 75 sq m Terrace Suite in the main villa, which has a private terrace which looks out on to Florence and the Tuscan countryside. It contains a uniquely decorated mezzanine-style bedroom with king-size bed and marble bathroom. Along with a private living room the Terrace Suite offers a private dining area both inside and outside on the secluded terrace, perfect for a romantic candlelit meal.
In addition, the villa location makes it easy to reach from the UK—just 12 km south of Florence and 23 km from Florence Peretola Airport. Flights from London to Florence are usually no more than 2 hours.
